Personal identity verification
How identity verification works
Verifying your identity confirms that a real, named person stands behind your Personal Profile. Here is what happens, and what VERIFIED does and does not keep.
What it involves
- You start verification from your Dashboard.
- You photograph an accepted identity document.
- You take a short selfie so the document can be matched to you.
- Our verification provider checks both and returns a result.
It usually takes a few minutes. Some checks need review and take longer.
What VERIFIED keeps
This matters, so it is worth being precise. Your document images and selfie are captured by our identity verification provider, not by VERIFIED. We receive the outcome of the check and a reference number.
VERIFIED does not store your document images, document number, or biometric data. Your identity documents are never shown on your public profile and are never shared with a business that asks about you.
If your document is rejected
The usual causes are practical rather than suspicious:
- Glare or shadow across the document
- Part of the document outside the frame
- A blurred photo
- An expired document
- A photocopy or a photo of a screen rather than the document itself
Photograph the original document on a flat, dark, non-reflective surface in even light, with all four corners visible.
If the camera will not work
Your browser needs permission to use the camera. On a phone, check the site permissions in your browser settings. Switching to a different browser often resolves it. A device with a rear camera generally produces a better document image.
What a verified identity means
It means the person behind the profile was confirmed at the time of the check. It does not mean VERIFIED endorses them, and it does not guarantee their future conduct. Identity may need reconfirming periodically.
